We’ve uncovered a 2011 interview with Medal of Honor recipient Capt. John J. McGinty, III who recently passed away at age 73 in Beaufort, S.C.
In the video by the publishers of ‘Medal of Honor: Portraits of Valor Beyond the Call of Duty’ McGinty recounts the harrowing 1966 battle for which he earned the medal. On July 15 of that year, his company was in Quang Tri Province, Vietnam, when they were assaulted by wave after wave of a North Vietnamese Army battalion.
He and his men narrowly survived the hours-long fight after calling in danger-close air support and at times engaging the enemy at point-blank range.
For more about the battle and his citation, see our recent story on marinecorpstimes.com.

I only knew Sgt. McGinty for a short time …. I was assigned to his platoon in 1966 just before this assignment . Sgt. McGinty was a Marines , Marine . I looked up to him as a leader. I was proud to be uder his command . I was in his platoon that day , Sgt. McGinty barked out orders as the North Viet Nam Army charged us . There was I think 32 of us Marines , and buy what I saw the enemy was about 1000 strong . Buy the bravery of Sgt. McGinty & his platoon fighting the fight of there life we stopped the enemy charge . I’m saddened to hear of this brave Marine’s passing . I hope to see him again when I pass on .

I met John McGinty when he was a Capt commanding HQ Co., 7th Marines, at Camp Pendleton in the mid-70’s. He was a witty guy, but that never overshadowed his military bearing or command authority. I remember that he was an “Old Corps” Marine. I don’t know if this is true, but Capt McGinty was rumored to have a glass eye with the Eagle, Globe & Anchor on it, and that he would remove it and replace it with a glass eye bearing a skull & crossbones whenever he held NJP in his company. He was a great Marine from what I saw and knew about him, and I’m sorry to learn that he has passed. RIP and Semper Fi!
